Environmental Stewardship

Building a Better Lake. When Agrium Wholesale undertook moving a 25-hectare lake by 300 meters, they not only maintained, but improved the quality of the wildlife habitat. This multi-year project in northern Ontario resulted in a thriving and sustainable environment for diverse aquatic plants, invertebrates, and more than 50,000 fish.

Environmental Stewardship

Our fertilizer products help replace nutrients removed through harvesting to support the sustainable production of food, fibre and fuel. By optimizing production on existing farm land we minimize habitat loss and recreational land destruction. We work to minimize negative impacts created through our mining, processing, transportation and use of our products.

We continually measure our existing environmental impacts, establish new or confirm existing targets, and integrate policies and programs to achieve those targets. In this way we can positively impact our effects on water, air and soil quality.

Agrium Wholesale works with industry associations and governments to develop policies, standards and systems that protect the environment. Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are engaged throughout this process by government and multi-stakeholder groups. Our employees implement, measure and continually improve the performance of our environmental systems.

Environment, Health, Safety & Security

The primary tool that guides us in implementing sound environmental practices is our Environment, Health and Safety Management System (EHS&S). Our EHS&S addresses all facets of environmental management, from air emissions and wastes, to water use and reclamation.

This program is audited regularly to ensure that recommendations for improvement are identified and implemented. Our internal programs go hand in hand with the government and regulatory standards in the countries where we have operations. Agrium Wholesale continually meets or exceeds these requirements, and proactively develops new initiatives to ensure that we continue to minimize our impact.

The EHS&S group is also responsible for monitoring and making recommendations on remedial action for inactive sites, and for advising on the environmental and economic implications of the future decommissioning of facilities. Other responsibilities of the group include the maintenance, communication and testing of Agrium Wholesale’s emergency response plan.
